THE ITINERARY

Day 1: HANOI

  • Welcome to Vietnam! We will meet at our hotel before sunrise to shoot the train street without the tourists.
  • Then, we take a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake in the old quarter where we will photograph the local morning routines of Hanoi's residents.
  • After breakfast, we head to Dong Xuan market to photograph the local life of the sellers.
  • In the late afternoon, we visit the Vintage Neighbourhood for street photography in an authentic setting.
  • Group welcome dinner to discuss our plans for the trip.

Day 2: CRAFT VILLAGES

  • An early start today as we explore 3 of the most photogenic craft villages on the outskirts of Hanoi.
  • First, we visit Quang Phu Cau, the famous incense stick village, where workers dye and dry incense sticks ready to export.
  • After lunch, we drive to the soy sauce village, where locals use large clay pots to make the famous Vietnamese soy sauce. We visit 2 different families here to capture a range of photos.
  • Then we explore the ancient fish trap village, where a small group of elderly locals continue to keep the tradition alive by hand-weaving fish traps. There's great opportunity for portrait photography here.

Day 3: CRAFT VILLAGES + RICE TERRACES

  • We rise before dawn to photograph a special craft in northern Vietnam: making rice paper. As we walk around the village, there will be ample opportunity to document the process of making and drying the rice paper, as every house has its own small factory.
  • We head back to Hanoi to check-out, and then make the long drive to Tu Le to begin our rice terrace adventure. There is plenty of opportunity to stop on the way to take photos.

Day 4: RICE TERRACES

  • We start the morning shooting in the Lim Mong Valley as the sun rises. The rice terraces are in the harvest season, so we will have the opportunity to photograph the local farmers as they plow the fields throughout the region.
  • Later, we drive further into Mu Cang Chai, where we will spend the next 2 days.
  • After checking in to our hotel, we meet our motorbike drivers who will be driving us around the area over the next 2 days.
  • We photograph La Pan Tan and Horse Shoe in the afternoon light.

    Day 5: RICE TERRACES

    • We have a full day exploring Mu Cang Chai today by motorbike. The weather in the mountains can change rapidly, so we will leave our itinerary flexible so that we can go where the weather is best.
    • We have the opportunity to photograph the local Hmong people in their villages and learn about their way of life,
    • Enjoy the sunset over the rolling hills before we return to our hotel for dinner.

      Day 6: TRAVEL DAY

      • We depart from Mu Cang Chai early and make the drive to Hanoi to catch our flight to Nha Trang. There begins the second half of our trip where we explore Central Vietnam.
      • Upon arriving in Nha Trang, we transfer to our beachfront resort and watch the sun set with a cold coconut in hand.

        DAY 7: SALT FLATS

        • After a busy first half of the trip, this morning is free at leisure for you to swim, sleep, or get a massage, with the option of joining a group editing session led by Jord.
        • In the afternoon we visit a salt flat nearby to photograph the farmers harvesting salt with the golden sunset light reflecting from the salt pools.

DAY 8: VAN GIA + SONG CAU

        • We continue with the early mornings and depart for Van Gia fishing community, capturing the daily life of the local fishermen at sunrise.
        • If we are lucky, we will see a group of locals making a fishing net, which they do every few months.
        • After lunch, we drive to Song Cau, where we shoot the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam. Surrounding the bridge there are huge fish nets which locals will be cleaning and mending from small coracle boats below.

        DAY 9: FISHING ACTIVITIES

        • This morning we explore another fishing community, where fishermen arrive at shore in coracle boats to sell their catch to the many sellers waiting on the beach. This is a great scene to photograph with a drone.
        • We then make our way to a large anchovy drying facility, where we photograph hundreds of crates of anchovies being left to dry in the sun from above.
        • Next, we photograph a net mending factory, where broken fishing nets are brought to be fixed.
        • Lastly, we explore the Song Cau salt flats at sunset for a different perspective of the salt harvesting process.

DAY 10: MAT WEAVING + CORACLE BOATS

        • Our last morning shooting together as a group sees us at a mat-weaving village in Song Cau, where we photograph the local workers dyeing and weaving mats made from seagrass.
        • We then visit a family that makes traditional bamboo coracle boats in their backyard and learn about the process of making these boats that generations have followed.
        • In the afternoon, you are invited to join an editing session with Jord and then our farewell dinner commences.

        Day 11: EDITING

        • We’ve added an extra day to the itinerary for an in-depth editing workshop.
        • While we’ll have shorter editing sessions throughout the trip, this day will give you the opportunity to organize and edit your photos from the past 10 days alongside Jord, offering a more focused editing experience.
        • Fly back to Hanoi and on to your next destination!

        Hey, I'm Jord

I'm a full-time travel and landscape photographer from the UK, and have been travelling through Asia for the last 8 years.

On a trip to Vietnam in 2023, I began exploring and photographing more remote locations, and it made me fall in love with the country even more.

From quaint fishing communities, traditional craft villages, unique street photography and the rice harvest in the countryside, I can't wait to share this journey with you in the beautiful country of Vietnam.

        Meet Mike from Momentlives

Mike will be our local guide in Vietnam.

I met Mike when I hired him as a photography guide on my trip to Vietnam in 2022, and we have been working on these workshops ever since. He is the best guide I've ever met (and I'm not just saying that). As well as being a good laugh, he is incredibly knowledgable about the history of Vietnam and has great relationships with the locals we'll be meeting.

He recently organised a workshop for none other than Steve McCurry, so we are in good hands!

The trip is first come, first served, and you must pay the deposit to secure your spot. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to me by email: hello@jordhammond.com
