THE ITINERARY

Day 1: HANOI

  • Welcome to Vietnam! We will meet at our hotel before sunrise to shoot the train street without the tourists
  • Then, we take a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake in the old quarter where we will photograph the local morning routines of Hanoi's residents
  • After breakfast, we head to Dong Xuan market to photograph the local life of the sellers
  • In the late afternoon, we visit the Vintage Neighbourhood for street photography in an authentic setting
  • Group welcome dinner to discuss our plans for the trip

Day 2: CRAFT VILLAGES

  • An early start today as we explore 3 of the most photogenic craft villages on the outskirts of Hanoi
  • First, we visit Quang Phu Cau, the famous incense stick village, where workers dye and dry incense sticks ready to export
  • After lunch, we drive to the soy sauce village, where locals use large clay pots to make the famous Vietnamese soy sauce. We visit 2 different families here to capture a range of photos
  • Then we explore the ancient fish trap village, where a small group of elderly locals continue to keep the tradition alive by hand weaving fish traps. There's great opportunity for portrait photography here

Day 3: CRAFT VILLAGES + Thac ba lake

  • We rise before dawn to photograph a special craft in northern Vietnam: making rice paper. As we walk around the village, there will be ample opportunity to document the process of making and drying the rice paper, as every house has it's own small factory
  • We head back to Hanoi to check-out, and then make our way to Thac Ba lake for a sunset photography session
  • Accompanied by some local fishermen, we will experience their way of life as they fish on the beautiful lake

Day 4: Tea picking + CERAMICS VILLAGE

  • This morning, we photograph the tea plantations in Thac Ba, where tea pickers traverse the rolling hills to harvest tea leaves. This is a great place for both camera and drone photography, and we have time for some portrait sessions too
  • Then we head to Phu Lang ceramics village, where ceramic pots, statues and coffins are made, painted and sold in almost every household. We stroll through the village as the sun begins to set to photograph the locals at work

Day 5: LYCHEE HARVEST

  • We spend the morning photographing the annual lychee harvest in Bac Giang, which only happens in the month of June. Here you can expect hundreds of bikes filled with lychees lining the streets ready to be sold, and lychee sorting factories where the workers package the lychees ready for transport.
  • We check-out of our hotel and drive to a lotus pond on the way back to Hanoi, where we photograph a local lady in her boat amongst the lotus leaves.
  • We then fly to Nha Trang ready to explore the fishing villages in Central Vietnam.

DAY 6: SALT FLATS

  • After a busy first half of the trip, this morning is free at leisure for you to swim, sleep or get a massage, with the option of joining a group editing session led by Jord.
  • In the afternoon we visit a salt flat nearby to photograph the farmers harvesting salt with the golden sunset light reflecting from the salt pools.

DAY 7: VAN GIA + SONG CAU

  • We continue with the early mornings and depart for Van Gia fishing community, capturing the daily life of the local fishermen at sunrise.
  • If we are lucky, we will see a group of locals making a fishing net, which they do every few months.
  • After lunch, we drive to Song Cau, where we shoot the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam. Surrounding the bridge there are huge fish nets which locals will be cleaning and mending from small coracle boats below.

DAY 8: FISHING ACTIVITIES

  • This morning we explore another fishing community, where fishermen arrive at shore in coracle boats to sell their catch to the many sellers waiting on the beach. This is a great scene to photograph with a drone.
  • We then make our way to a large anchovy drying facility, where we photograph hundreds of crates of anchovies being left to dry in the sun from above.
  • Next, we photograph a net mending factory, where broken fishing nets are brought to be fixed.
  • Lastly, we explore the Song Cau salt flats at sunset for a different perspective of the salt harvesting process.

DAY 9: MAT WEAVING + CORACLE BOATS

  • Our last morning together as a group sees us at a mat weaving village in Song Cau, where we photograph the local workers dyeing and weaving mats made from seagrass.
  • We then visit a family that makes traditional bamboo coracle boats in their backyard, and learn about the process of making these boats that generations have followed.
  • Fly from Tuy Hoa back to Hanoi and say goodbye to the team.

Hey, I'm Jord

I'm a full-time travel and landscape photographer from the UK, and have been travelling through Asia for the last 8 years.

On my most recent trip to Vietnam in 2023, I began exploring and photographing more remote locations, and it made me fall in love with the country even more.

From quaint fishing communities, traditional craft villages, unique street photography and the lychee harvest phenomenon, I can't wait to share this journey with you in the beautiful country of Vietnam.

Our Local Guide: Meet Mike from Momentlives

Mike will be our local guide in Vietnam.

I met Mike when I hired him as a photography guide on my trip to Vietnam in 2022, and we have been working on these workshops ever since. He is the best guide I've ever met (and I'm not just saying that). As well as being a good laugh, he is incredibly knowledgable about the history of Vietnam and has great relationships with the locals we'll be meeting.

He recently organised a workshop for none other than Steve McCurry, so we are in good hands!
